Metris
The virtual e-mail communication reveals typographic limitations, similar to the era of the typewriter, because the structure of the e-mail system doesn't facilitate varying font specifications. Thus the system creates a visual standardization, as its alignment adopts automatically the font specifications of the recipient. Therefore every transmitted e-mail creates a visual equal output.
The Metris typeface is the result of an typographic experiment that aims to evade the visual stadardization of the e-mail system. The concept is based on the idea to create an "interactive typeface" which adapts to the e-mail system. The implementation was then started by constructing letters with various alternate characters, which are included in most standard fonts. In this way it is possible to create a complete alphabet that maintains its appearance in the transmitted output. The visual appearance of the typeface evokes a strong ancient, archaic affinnity of early letter drawings of the antiquity. So the whole process seems like a shift of time. Therfore the idea has been developed further, in order to create the digital (physical) font Metris.
The basic structure of the typeface is formal a sublime reflection of the original e-mail type construction, rather than an exact adoptation, to maintain the demand of providing the typeface with a complete character set. The design and construction of each character preserve its original concept, though the alignment of Metris is rather following the classical structure. The slight italic Žnish of the letter design should contrast Metris from its original contsruction, to draw a clear line between the "virtual" typeface and the "physical" font.
Metris is a comprehensive display family that comprises three weights, book, medium and bold, all with small caps derivatives, ligatures and interlocking ornaments.
