THE TYPEFACE | APPLIED
Metris Translator

Typography versus plain text: can stylised typography be interpreted in a meaningful manner in a non typographical context? The original translator attempts to cross the boundaries between plain text and a virtual-"typeface", which is composed solely of characters found in a modern computer's character set: punctuation marks, slashes, basic mathematical symbols, etc. The translator performs the conversion to and from this typeface via a intuitive user interface, allowing email based conversations to be carried out using both the typeface and plain text.

Metris, the corporate typeface of datadive.com

The virtual origin of Metris predestines the typeface as an ideal corporate typeface for the visual image of datadive.com. The logotype design accompanies with icons taken from the Metris ornament set to represent the departments of the company.

Every media has its own language and its own signs.

2002/03/31 20:28:25 -> DAS IST EIN KLEINER SüSSER CHAT | THE BOOK
The chat is sometimes defined as communication at the interchange of speech and writing. It is also regarded as a species of text or literary category, with its own peculiar characteristics. Chats are based, as well as other forms of textual or electronical communication (e-mails, sms), on the ability of abstract achievements of writers and readers, who create additional emotional information out of a sequence of punctuation and with that generate an equivalent to voice-modulation, gesture, and mimic.
The optical appearance, the asthetics of signs, used in a chat has therefore an additional (emotional) connotation as in other media. Moreover chats give reason to overthink the theory of a protolanguage, because one of the central tropes used in chats is the onomatopoeia. But what happens with all that, if the chat is transferred from the cyberspace to another media, e.g. the book? The fixed acts of speaking gain a new quality, the changing persons and the technically directed coincidence receive a solidification in the possibility of receptual iteration...
And if all that should not be true, than the "kleine süße Chat" is still a prime example of postmodern communication, which has the characteristic feature of neverending irony ;-)

2002/03/31 20:28:25 -> DAS IST EIN KLEINER SüSSER CHAT | THE FILM
To demonstrate the topic "chat" in a film means to transfer media immanent characteristics of communication. The chat is an internetspecific, digital form of expression and demands an abstraction effort from the chatter. Film provides in this thematical environment the possibility to overcome the spatial distance beween the actors.
The alienation happening during the mediatransfer emerges in a strange contrast: singular persons, sitting in front of their computer screens, participate in a communication which does not provide any equivalent to show physical expressions. Conventional forms of communication in "real time" are accompanied by various physical components. Chatting is also a "real time" communication, but the physical absence (geographical distance) has to be compensated.
The film "DAS IST EIN KLEINER SüSSER CHAT" is a documentary of modern communication. Communication of people in different areas is not an equivalent for isolation, but the overcoming of the geographical distance, by the possibility of meeting in a virtual room, the chatroom, represented by the computerscreen.
